The Bishop Lynch baseball team made another trip to the postseason in 2017 and placed a pair of Friars on the All-District 1st Team, voted on by the district coaches.
Senior pitcher Joey Rutherford and junior first baseman Gabe Vasquez made the first team, freshman Westin Walls was picked for the second team and honorable mention was earned by senior Marc De La Valdene.
Vasquez led the Friars in almost every offensive category, including batting average (.388), slugging percentage (.621), hits (40), doubles (8), triples (5), home runs (2) and runs batted in (27). The junior slugger also struck out just eight times in 103 official at-bats.
Rutherford was the Friars' go-to pitcher, posting a team-best 6-2 record with a 3.45 earned run average, 46 strikeouts, 37 earned runs and only 14 walks in 56.2 innings of work.
Walls tossed 23 innings for Bishop Lynch, striking out 20. De La Valdene was third in hits (27), second in RBIs (21) and scored a team-high 28 times.
The Friars finished the season with a 14-20-1 record and swept rival Nolan Catholic to clinch a playoff berth. Bishop Lynch was swept in the first round by Antonian.
