All-State, team awards given to Friar baseball team

A pair of Friar baseball players were recognized last week and voted to the TAPPS Division I All-State Baseball Team.

Junior Gabe Vasquez and senior Joey Rutherford added to their postseason accolades, with Vasquez making the 2nd Team and Rutherford receiving honorable mention.

Vasquez led the team in batting average, slugging percentage, hits, doubles, triples, home runs and RBIs during the 2017 season.

Rutherford posted a team-best 6-2 record on the hill for the Friars.

Additionally, a number of Friars picked up awards during the team banquet, including the Team MVP, Offensive MVP and Defensive MVP awards for all three Friar baseball teams. The awards were awarded to:

Offensive MVP – Gabe Vasquez

Defensive MVP – Joey Rutherford & Seth Torres



Team MVP – Will Haynes

Offensive MVP – Max Danielsen

Defensive MVP – Lucas Herrmann



Team MVP – Sonny Alaniz

Offensive MVP – Garrett Young

Defensive MVP – Mike Rutherford
