Friars head to Argyle tonight with district lead on the line

The Friars' win streak came to an end Tuesday, but the team still sits in good shape with control of their own destiny as a critical contest looms tonight in Argyle.

Liberty Christian pulled into a tie for the district lead Tuesday, taking a win at BL, but the Friars bounced back the following evening during Senior Night. With five games to play in the regular season, the Friars are still on great footing.

Friars 9, Trinity Christian 6

The Friars finished a sweep of TCA, although they had to wait a while to put it in the books. With the Trojans leading 6-5 in the bottom of the fifth, the game was suspended for two hours due to lightning. When play resumed, the Friars left no doubt, outscoring TCA 4-0 the rest of the way. Gabe Vasquez and Seth Torres each drove in a pair of runs. Westin Walls doubled twice. Blake Bautz (6-1) picked up his sixth win of the season.

Despite an 8-strikeout performance from Walls, the Friars couldn't hang enough on the scoreboard to stay with Liberty Christian in the first game of the series. Vasquez hit an opposite field homer for the only BL run of the game and the Warriors scored four in the third and five more in the sixth.

Friars 8, St. Mark's 5

Bishop Lynch celebrated Senior Night on Wednesday, and senior Josh Frausto led the way to a non-district win over St. Mark's. Frausto hit a two-run homer and drove on three runs. Vasquez doubled for one of his two hits. Senior Johnny Henderson earned the win, tossing four innings with five strikeouts and just two hits allowed.

The Friars have won eight of their last nine contests dating back to March 16. Bautz (57) and Walls (55) both rank among the DFW-area leaders in strikeouts. Vasquez now has 11 extra-base hits this season. Matt Johnson leads the team in hits (27) and batting average (.409).

The Friars head to Argyle tonight for the district counter match with Liberty Christian. The winner takes sole possession of first place in the district. They start a series with John Paul II on Tuesday in Plano and the counter game is scheduled for Friday, April 20 at McIngvale Field. All games begin at 7 pm.
