Friars shut down HSAA rally to win season opener

Thanks to a strong start Tuesday night, the Bishop Lynch baseball team started the 2019 season with a win, toping HSAA 6-5 at McIngvale Field.

The Friars (1-0) got off to a 6-0 lead after four frames, scoring a run in each of the first three innings, then three more in the fourth. The visitors roared back with a three-run fifth and two more in the seventh before having their rally stopped short.

Max Danielsen (1-0) picked up the win on the mound, tossing four shutout innings while allowing just two hits and striking out seven. The senior also finished 1-for-3 at the plate. Fellow senior Aaron Hunter earned the save and drove in two runs with a double.

Darries Boyd doubled and John McVicker drove in a run for the Friars, who return to action Friday night at home against Skyline.

Danielsen threw just 59 pitches with 35 strikes and walked just two batters. Lucas Herrmann tossed two innings in relief and Hunter pitched the seventh.
