On a week-long break from district play, the Bishop Lynch Friars earned a win Tuesday at home against St. Mark's, but it wasn't without some late drama.
The Friars (11-14-1) took a 4-0 lead into the final inning but had to hold off a St. Mark's rally before closing out a 4-2 victory at McIngvale Field. John McVicker (5-5) tossed three scoreless innings to earn the win, striking out four and allowing just two hits. George Hettrick posted three scoreless innings in relief with five strikeout and two hits.
Darries Boyd had two of the Friars' five hits in the game, including a triple and a bunt single that put the Friars ahead 4-0 in the fifth. Four of the Friars' five hits went for extra bases as Aaron Hunter also tripled while Kaleb Boyles and Jalen Webster bagged doubles.
Webster drove in a run in the first to take a 1-0 lead, then McVicker helped Hunter make it 2-0 with a sacrifice in the second. Matt Johnson scored in the fifth on a ground ball from Kade Findley and Boyd bunted down the third base line to score Garrett Young.
St. Mark's had managed just four hits through the first six innings but singled twice in the seventh and took advantage of a hit batter and walk to get a pair of runs across. Will Haynes ended the drama with a strikeout.
The Friars got some breathing room in the district standings during their night off from league play, thanks to Prestonwood's 1-0 win over Parish Episcopal. The Parish loss put the Friars 1.5 games ahead of the Panthers for the fourth and final playoff spot. Bishop Dunne also lost, allowing the Friars to pull within a half-game of the Falcons for third place.
Bishop Lynch will entertain L.D. Bell on Friday and the Friar seniors will be recognized prior to the Senior Night contest, scheduled for 7:00 pm.
