PLANO – Bishop Lynch came close to knocking off not only the district leader, but one of the top programs in the state of Texas on Tuesday night, but instead fell at Prestonwood Christian by a 3-2 margin.
The Friars (11-16-1, 3-6) had a chance to pull in front of Bishop Dunne for third place in the district, but instead remain fourth and now just one game ahead of Parish Episcopal for the fourth and final playoff spot. Parish beat John Paul II in Plano on Tuesday.
Bishop Lynch managed just two hits but held the Lions to four, all singles. Aaron Hunter tripled and scored and Grant Young stole a pair of bases. Matt Johnson drove in a run and Kaleb Boyles singled, scored and stole a base.
John McVicker was good on the mound but took the loss after four innings of work. The senior allowed four hits, three runs, and six walks while striking out three. George Hettrick turned in another strong relief performance with two hitless and scoreless innings.
The Lions struck first on a single and bases-loaded walk for a 2-0 lead, but the Friars cut the deficit in half in the fourth on Johnson's ground ball that scored Hunter. The Lions went back ahead by a pair in the fifth on a wild pitch before the Friars cut it to a run again in the sixth when Boyles scored on a passed ball.
Bishop Lynch went down in order in the seventh, facing just seven pitches that resulted in three ground ball out.
The Friars now face a critical must-win game Friday at home against John Paul II, with Parish Episcopal hosting Bishop Dunne on the same evening. Friday's game at McIngvale Field is scheduled for a 7:00 pm start.
