MIDLAND — Bishop Lynch picked the perfect time to get their first road win, opening up a large lead Friday and cruising to a 35-15 win over Midland Christian in the TAPPS Division I playoffs.
The Friars (6-4) shut down the Mustangs' rushing attack early while picking off four passes, two of which were returned for scores.
Charles Crawford rushed for 136 yards and three scores to lead the Friars, offensively. Most of the Mustangs' 308 total yards came in the fourth quarter with Bishop Lynch comfortably ahead. The Friars totaled 340 without a turnover.
Crawford opened the scoring with a 25-yard run on a fourth down play. Midland Christian (8-3) marched down the field and into the Friars' red zone, but Grayson Murphy picked off a Mustang pass and took it 95 yards to the end zone. Midland Christian never recovered, turning over the ball three more times. Aaron Hunter picked off a screen pass and went 25 yards for another defensive score.
Kaidon Salter was solid in his playoff debut, passing for 116 yards and rushing for 60 more without a turnover. Logan Monroe (11), Plae Wyatt (10) and Gabriel Murphy (10) each had double-digit tackles, Michael Schwartz had nine stops, including three for loss and Grayson Murphy made eight tackles.
Bishop Lynch moves on to the regional round to face Houston St. Thomas on Saturday. The game is scheduled for 2 pm at Fairfield's Eagle Stadium.
