Friars heading to state title game after historic second half in Irving

IRVING – As the saying goes, it's not how you start, but how you finish. The Bishop Lynch football team certainly finished with authority Saturday, rallying from 17 down at halftime for a 65-45 victory over Liberty Christian at Ellis Stadium.

The Friars (8-4) head to the TAPPS D1 State Championship on Friday after outscoring the Warriors (8-5) by an eye-popping 44-7 margin in the second half and 27-0 in the final period.

Charles Crawford continued his assault on the playoff field, rushing for 367 yards and six touchdowns just one week after gaining 375 yards against St. Thomas. Crawford has run for 878 yards and 13 touchdowns in three playoff games and earned his second Offensive Player of the Week nod from SportsDayHS.

Kaidon Salter hit 70 percent of his throws for 122 yards and ripped off a pair of dazzling scoring runs in the fourth quarter. Elijah Sisk blocked a punt in the third period, which was picked up by Jackson Epes and taken in for another touchdown. Carson Garrett added an impressive 45-yard field goal against a strong cross wind.

Logan Monroe registered a team-high 11 tackles, Plae Wyatt added 10 while also setting up a score with a 38-yard punt return to the 2-yard line. Michael Schwartz had nine stops including one for a loss.

The defense totaled six tackles for loss, 13 hurries on the quarterback and broke up six passes. Warren Walls picked up a sack and now has at least one in all three playoff games.

The Friars head to Midway ISD's Panther Stadium on Friday to face rival Bishop Dunne in the state title game with kickoff scheduled for 7 pm. Bishop Lynch has been designated as the visiting team.
