Few teams have gotten the best of the Bishop Lynch Friars on their way to a third straight district championship and 30-win season. They're hoping that trend continues Friday when the playoffs begin at Brewer High School.
The third-ranked Friars (31-5) went unbeaten through district play (8-0) and most recently dropped a playoff warmup game at Oak Cliff's Faith Family Academy, played without leading scorer Jake Milkereit.
The Friars take on Liberty Christian, the fourth seed in District 1, at 5:30 pm Friday, looking to beat the Warriors (20-13) a second time this season. The Friars blew past Liberty Christian in a non-district contest on Jan. 11 by a score of 71-44. The winner of Friday's game will face either Nolan Catholic or Prestonwood Christian on Saturday at 5:30 pm.
In their January meeting, the Friars led 13-3 after one period and 38-11 at the half. Milkereit (14), Zach Muller (14), Imo Essien (11), and Jack Bradley (10) were all in double figures. The Friars have averaged just short of 70 points per game this season, led by Milkereit (19.6), Muller (16.5) and Essien (14.4). Muller (7.1) leads the team in rebounding, followed by Milkereit (6.3) and Bradley (6.1). Milkereit has made 113 three-pointers while shooting 45 percent (113-of-250) from long range.
Liberty Christian snapped a three-game losing streak last weekend, winning a playoff warmup game against Wichita Falls Hirschi, 50-42. However, prior to that game, the Warriors had lost each of their last three district games by at least 13 points against Nolan Catholic, Midland Christian, and Trinity Christian.
