Four earn medals during field events at state meet

WACO — Bishop Lynch athletes earned a total of four medals Friday during the first day of competition at the 2016 TAPPS State Championships at Clyde Hart Track and Field Stadium on the Baylor University campus.

Three Lady Friars and one Friar finished the first day — consisting of field events and a distance running event — with bronze medals to their credit.

Bri Kipp cleared five feet in the high jump to finish third, while teammates Kelli Nary and Amarachie Anozie finished fifth and eighth, respectively.

Mie Somiari was third in the long jump after a best jump of 16 feet, eight inches. Jaida Thomas (5th) and Emma Williams (7th) helped BL earn three of the top seven spots.

Anozie later finished third in the triple jump with a best jump of 36 feet, 9 ½ inches. Somiari was fifth in the event.

The final medal of the day went to senior Gage Tipton, who cleared six feet and two inches to finish third in the men's high jump.

Cindy Ogunedo was fourth in the shot put, Ava Peeples was fourth in the 3200-meter run and Malen Hernandez was eighth in the discus. Jermaine Mask (6th) and Joe Brockman (7th) competed in the triple jump and pole vault, respectively.

Day 2 will begin tomorrow at 9 a.m. with a slew of running events. Things will kick off with the 400-meter relays, followed by the 800 meters. After the invocation, the following events will take place: 100 and 110 hurdles, 100 meters, 800-meter relays, 400 meters, 300 hurdles, 200 meters, 1600 meters. The day concludes with the exciting 1600-meter relays.
