Until opposing sides can figure out how to slow Jaida Thomas, the Lady Friar soccer club will be an incredibly tough out for anybody.
Thomas – who recently signed to play soccer at the University of Tennessee – has scored at least one goal in 10 of the teams' 11 matches and has four hat tricks on the season. In 11 matches, Thomas has 23 goals.
She had a brilliant week to start 2019, scoring 11 goals in four matches, including nine goals in the three contests during the National Elite Prep Showcase. The Lady Friars (9-2, 4-1 district) earned wins over St. Stephen's (6-1) and Odessa (3-0) and dropped a close game to nationally-ranked Grapevine (4-3).
On Monday, the ladies earned a 2-0 shutout win over John Paul II, not only avenging their only district loss of the year but putting themselves on top of the league standings thanks to a head-to-head tiebreaker with Ursuline.
Thomas' success comes with help, however, as Mallory Johnson has posted a team-best 13 assists, plus seven helpers by Mariana Zevallos. Andrea Marentes and Alexis Sanders, who switched to a defensive role this season, have each posted four goals and three assists while Johnson is second on the team with five goals.
The girls play again Monday at Parish Episcopal (6:00 pm) then compete in the Duncanville Classic against Arlington, Sunset, and Alvin from Jan. 17-19. The next home game is scheduled for Jan. 21 against Bishop Dunne.
