Stingy defense leads Lady Friars into state title contest

After a two-year hiatus, the Bishop Lynch Lady Friars are back in the TAPPS Division I State Championship game. But unlike previous trips, their opponent won't be quite so familiar.

The Lady Friars (18-5-0) will meet Houston's St. Agnes Academy (16-3-1) on Saturday at 2:00 pm at Waco ISD Stadium, the first meeting between the two teams since 2017, then the Tigers eliminated the Lady Friars in the semifinal round.

The Lady Friars have used a stellar defensive attack to log 240 consecutive scoreless minutes and shut out all three playoff opponents, including Liberty Christian (4-0), Trinity Christian (3-0) and John Paul II (1-0) in Wednesday's semifinal contest.

Gabby Dunn scored the only goal of the game at TCA last night, taking a ball from Mallory Johnson and lofting a high, arching shot up and over the head of the opposing keeper midway through the first half.

Jaida Thomas leads the Metroplex and is 35thnationally with 38 goals this season, recording nine hat tricks in the process. She also ranks in the Top 50 nationally in total points scored (84). Ironically, teammate Mallory Johnson also leads the Metroplex and also ranks 35thnationally with 24 assists. Goalkeeper Madison White leads the Metroplex in shutouts with 15.

St. Agnes made its way into the state title game with playoff wins over Awty International (4-0), Antonian Prep (2-1), and Kelly Catholic (3-0).
