When the Bishop Lynch Lady Friars officially open the 2017 season Tuesday, the road to redemption begins.

It's already been said … why does a team that lost in the state championship game need to redeem itself? They accomplished a lot. Well, that's true. But for a program that expects nothing less than a state championship year after year, finishing second fell short of expectations.

"We expect to win state every year," head coach Tricia Roos said. "If we stay healthy we'll dominate and compete with the top public schools."

Roos (324-99 in 10 years at BL) enters her 11th year as head coach of the program with 30 or more wins in nine straight. The Lady Friars enter the season ranked #1 in the TAPPS 6A Preseason Coaches Poll, but had their streak of consecutive state titles stopped at four last season, upset in the state final by Concordia Lutheran, which won a thrilling five-set match.

This year, a hungry senior class (nine total) looks to lead the Lady Friars back to where they've been five times under their coach – on top of TAPPS 6A.

"This senior class is extremely competitive and they'll be motivated after how we finished last season," Roos said. "They want to win."

The top-ranked Lady Friars scrimmage today in Southlake and tomorrow at Lovejoy before opening the season in McKinney against a traditionally–strong McKinney Boyd program. The varsity match is scheduled to begin at 6:30 pm.
