PLANO – In order to earn the last available spot in this weekend's state volleyball tournament, the Bishop Lynch Friars had to get past a familiar foe. In a rubber match with rival Ursuline Academy, the ladies closed the deal, topping the Bears in four sets, and grabbing a state semifinal berth.

Bishop Lynch (28-11) will run into yet another district foe on Friday, as the Friars and district champion Prestonwood Christian (30-6) square off in the first semifinal match at Midway High School at 4 pm. Prestonwood owns two wins over the Friars this season, both in five sets.

If the Friars can grab a win Friday, they'll advance to Saturday's TAPPS 6A State Championship match against either Concordia Lutheran or Houston's St. Agnes at 3 pm. Those teams meet in the other semifinal following the BL-PCA match.

After dropping the first meeting at Ursuline, during which the Friars led 2-0, Bishop Lynch evened the season series with a 3-1 win at home to close out the regular season. Saturday's playoff game saw the Friars perform much like they did in the second meeting.

Izzy Clavenna had a team-high 22 kills to go with 12 digs, Lauryn Green put down 18 kills and led the team with four blocks, and Katie Blomberg posted nine digs, six kills and a block.

Alex Galicia had 16 assists, Elizabeth Edwards had 12 assists and eight kills and Sydney Broussard led the team with 19 digs.
