Bishop Lynch at Rice: Game Preview & Information

| By:
Bishop Lynch High School (1-2) will travel southbound on I-45 to take on the Rice Bulldogs (1-2) for the first time in program history.

Get to Know Rice High School:
  • Founded: 1913
  • Location: Rice, TX
  • Colors: Blue and White
  • Mascot: Bulldogs
  • League: University Interscholastic League (UIL)
  • Division: 3A - District 2
  • Grades: 9-12
  • Enrollment: 300
  • 2023 Record: 1-9

History:

This is the first-ever meeting between Bishop Lynch and Rice in football.

Players to Watch:

Bishop Lynch:
  • #3 William Estes: The senior running back has been dealing with nagging injuries this season, but that didn't slow him down last week. Estes rushed for 131 yards on 20 carries. Given that Rice has allowed 200+ rushing yards in all of their games this season, look for Estes to have another big day running the ball.
  • #12 Drew Richardson: The veteran defensive lineman recorded his first sack last week, along with eight tackles. With over 110 career tackles and eight career sacks, expect Richardson to create a turnover or two for the Friar defense.
Rice:
  • #23 Alvaro Contreras: Though just a sophomore, the young running back is key to Rice's offensive performance. In their lone victory this year, Contreras rushed for three touchdowns and 83 yards on ten carries. No other player had more than five carries. He's also a threat in the passing game, having caught two passes for 30 yards in the same game.
  • #5 Reece Ellington: The junior playmaker will be all over the field on Friday night in Bulldog Stadium. In Rice's lone victory, Ellington caught two passes for 16 yards and added two interceptions with four tackles. Once the ball is in his hands, he's a scoring threat, returning those interceptions for 56 yards and adding a 38-yard punt return.

Keys to the Game:

Bishop Lynch:
The Friars offense needs to find its rhythm from the start. Against Midland Christian, their first three drives ended in three-and-outs, and against Bishop McGuinness, their first two drives ended in turnovers. Despite these slow starts, they have proven to be a dynamic and solid unit, gaining over 100 rushing and passing yards in all three games. If the Friars can control the clock with their running game and give the defense time to rest, they will head into their bye week at .500.

Rice:
After their season-opening 57-14 victory over A+ Academy, the Bulldogs have struggled, being outscored 123-21 in their last two games. In their lone victory, they found success both in the air and on the ground, racking up nearly 400 yards on offense while their defense forced four turnovers. With many two-way players on their roster, Rice's offense must control the tempo and run the clock. The shorter the game, the better the chance for Rice to keep it close.
