The Friars had just one final shot at controlling their own postseason fate, and they seized it Thursday in their regular season finale against Parish Episcopal, beating the Panthers 5-3 and clinching the final playoff berth in the district.
The Friars (14-18-1) will face FW All Saints next week in a TAPPS Division I Area playoff game. The Saints edged out Liberty Christian to win the District 1-1 championship.
George Hettrick tossed 2.2 innings of spotless relief and earned his first win of the season, supporting John McVicker's strong three innings of work. Westin Walls got the start but worked on a limited pitch count while continuing to bounce back from injury.
The Panthers took a 2-0 lead in the opening inning, but the Friars tied it in the fourth as Grant Young and Kaleb Boyles scored on passed balls. Parish regained the lead in the fifth, but the Friars went ahead for good in the bottom half on Webster's two-out, two-run double that scored McVicker and Young.
Webster ended the Parish sixth when he picked off a runner at third, then Darries Boyd stole home in the bottom of the sixth to pad the lead. Hettrick retired the side in order to shut the door and nail down the playoff berth before a big crowd.
