Friars finish first lap through district unscathed

Halfway through district play, the Bishop Lynch men's basketball team is right where it wants to be, at the top of the district, looking down.

The Friars (27-4, 4-0) had the night off Tuesday and return Friday to take on second-place John Paul II in Plano. After needing overtime to put away Prestonwood last Friday, some extra time off may be just what the Friars need to refocus for the stretch run.

In front of the biggest crowd of the season, the Friars struggled out of the gate but managed a one-point advantage at halftime (24-23). That lead jumped to seven heading into the fourth quarter but Prestonwood stormed back in the fourth to regain the lead with under a minute to play.

Imo Essien calmly sank a pair of free throws to send the game into overtime, where the Friars outscored PCA 14-8 and took a 70-64 win. Essien finished with 16 points, including a perfect 5-of-5 at the line.

Zach Muller led the Friars with 23 points, 10 steals, six rebounds and five assists. Jake Milkereit added 19 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals.

The Friars will make another run through the district schedule after a 4-0 record the first time through. Bishop Lynch is at John Paul II on Friday, then back home for home games against Parish on Feb. 5, and Bishop Dunne on Feb. 8. The regular season ends Feb. 12 at Prestonwood Christian.
