UNIVERSITY PARK – An 11-run fourth inning burst Friday's rubber match between Bishop Lynch and John Paul II wide open, propelling the Friars into the TAPPS D1 State tournament with a convincing 15-1 victory in five innings at Highland Park.
Lillia Farlow doubled and drove in three runs, Alexis Martinez doubled home a pair of runs and Tabitha Jackson doubled as the Friars (23-13-2) totaled 11 hits on their way to a 12th consecutive victory.
Gabi Quintanilla had three hits and drove in two runs, Natalie Escalante drove in three runs and Marielma Garcia had two RBIs as 10 different players scored at least one run for the Friars. Jackson picked up her 19th win of the season, surrendering just three hits and a run while striking out six in five innings.
The Cardinals opened the scoring with a run in the first and held that lead until the third when the Friars put up a four-spot to take a 4-1 lead. It was all downhill from there for John Paul II, who handed the Friars their last loss back on March 20.
In the 11-run fourth, the Friars had seven hits (3 doubles), walked four times and reached once on a hit by pitch. Bishop Lynch led 10-1 before recording an out in the inning and 12-1 before getting their second out.
The Friars head to Crosby this weekend for the TAPPS Division I State Tournament, where they'll face former district rival Nolan Catholic in the state semifinals Friday at 3:30 pm. The championship game is scheduled for 12:30 pm Saturday.
