State finalist Friars collect postseason awards haul

Gabi Quintanilla earned All-State honors for the third time and Lillia Farlow got her second selection to headline a long list of postseason honors for the state finalist Bishop Lynch softball program.

Quintanilla was among three – Farlow and Tabitha Jackson – to make it to the All-State 1st Team, while Evelyn Santos received All-State Honorable Mention after a season in which the Friars finished 24-14-2 overall, won a district title and fell in the state championships game by a 3-2 margin.

Farlow, Jackson, Quintanilla and Alexis Martinez were all chosen to the TAPPS All-Tournament Team after leading the Friars to a 7-3 state semifinal win over Nolan Catholic and shining in the championship loss to St. Agnes Academy.

Quintanilla led the team with a .576 average, 68 hits, 66 runs, 21 stolen bases, and 10 triples to earn her third straight All-State nod. She was also named District MVP. The junior, verbally committed to East Central University, was near flawless at the shortstop position with a .963 fielding percentage and also won three games in the pitching circle.

Farlow returned with 1stTeam honors after receiving All-State honorable mention a year ago. She also won the district's Defensive Player of the Year award after posting a .980 fielding percentage from her catcher position, with just four errors in 200 chances. The junior hit .427 with 41 hits, 33 RBIs, 15 doubles and a team-high three home runs.

Jackson earned 1st Team All-State honors in her freshman season that included 20 wins in the pitching circle, a 3.66 ERA, 171 strikeouts in 170 innings and an opponents' batting average of just .238. She was also big at the plate, hitting .423 with 47 hits, 39 runs, 43 RBIs, 17 doubles, six triples, and 14 steals.

Fellow freshman Santos posted 30 hits, 21 RBIs, 27 runs, 12 stolen bases, and a fielding percentage of .923 at second base.

Martinez (junior), JP Sammis (sophomore), and Natalia Escalante (freshman) were all chosen 2nd Team All-District. Martinez and Farlow were recognized for their class work as well, with Academic All-State honors.
