Friars, Bears to meet Thursday for district title

One game separates the Lady Friar soccer team from the postseason. But before the playoffs begin, there's the issue of who will win the district title.

That will be decided tomorrow night, when the Lady Friars (15-4, 8-1) head across town to face Ursuline Academy (16-1-2, 8-1) with the winner earning the title.

Bishop Lynch won the first meeting between the two teams, a 2-0 shutout win at Roffino Stadium, however, the Lady Friars dropped their first district contest of the season, a 2-0 loss at John Paul II, giving the two teams identical league records.

As the true road team this season, the Lady Friars are 4-2, including a 6-1 loss at McKinney Boyd on Friday that was completed with most of the varsity resting. In the four road wins, the ladies outscored the opposition 14-0, with almost half of those goals coming in Monday's 6-0 win at Prestonwood Christian.

Jaida Thomas scored three times and tallied an assist while Alexis Sanders, Gabby Dunn, and Jillian Jackson each added a goal. Sanders and Dunn each had an assist while Mallory Johnson assisted on two goals.

It was the sixth hat trick and 11th multi-goal match for Thomas this season, who has 32 goals in 15 games. Johnson has 11 goals and a team-high 20 assists and Sanders has 11 assists to go with seven goals.

The Bears are 5-0 on their home turf, outscoring the opposition 25-3. The Lady Friars are one of only three teams to score multiple goals in a game against Ursuline, but the only team to beat the Bears in 19 matches.
