YOUTH MOVEMENT: Freshman hitters finding stride at right time

Lady Friars outlast JPII, move into tie for third

If Thursday's result is any evidence, the Lady Friars' young nucleus might be finally coming together … and at precisely the right time. Bishop Lynch avenged an earlier loss to John Paul II last night with a 3-2 victory over the Cardinals at home, pulling into a third-place tie with four games remaining.

The Lady Friars improved to 17-11 overall and 3-3 in district play with a five-set win by scores of 25-14, 25-18, 22-25, 22-25, and 15-10. Bishop Lynch and John Paul II (15-15-1 overall) are now tied for third and just one game behind Prestonwood Christian for second.

Of the Lady Friars' 47 kills Tuesday, 36 were scored by freshmen, who also registered 12 of the team's 14 blocks. Avery Kinzer led the way with 11 kills, Leah Oyewole had 10 kills, and Ashlyn Zilliken added nine kills and two blocks. Lyric Berry had a career-high nine blocks to go with six kills.
Juniors Emily Castleman (six kills) and Caroline Hamick (four kills, two blocks) also played well on the net for the Lady Friars.

While the freshmen were stellar up front, the veterans held up their end covering the rest of the court. Elizabeth Edwards (22 assists), Alex Galicia (16 assists), and Charlotte Hain (14 digs) played pivotal roles, as did Jenny Canavan (10 digs) and Sydney Broussard (10 digs).

The Lady Friars take their momentum to Parish on Tuesday as they try and take out the first-place Panthers (21-8, 6-0), who took the first meeting in four sets back on Sept. 19.
