Friars eliminate mistakes, All Saints in playoff victory

FORT WORTH – Turnovers and penalties at crucial moments plagued the Bishop Lynch Friars in their final two regular season contests. In their playoff opener, the Friars put those away and took care of business with a 21-14 road win over All Saints in Friday's TAPPS D1 Area contest at McNair Stadium.

Darries Boyd ran for 177 yards, Jordan Bernau hauled in a career-high five receptions, Ayden Howard bullied his way in for a pair of scores, and quarterback Michael Light turned in his most complete performance of the season, completing 12 of his 14 passes for 108 yards and a touchdown.

All Saints (5-5) threw for 284 yards but managed just 31 rushing yards on 22 attempts. The Friars (5-6) again dominated the ground game, finishing with 228 yards and 5.3 yards per carry.
All Saints took a 7-0 lead midway through the opening frame, but after stopping the Saints on downs, the Friars tied it up on Light's 16-yard pass to Matt McLaughlin with 30 seconds left in the first.

The Saints took the lead again midway through the second, but again, with less than a minute to play in the period, the Friars tied it at 14-14, this time on Howard's 1-yard run to cap a 12-play drive lasting more than five minutes. All Saints was held to less than 100 yards of offense in the second half, with the Saints' possessions ending on punts (3 times), downs (twice), and a fumble in the early moments of the fourth period.

The Friars' game-winning drive took 4:25 off the clock and covered 80 yards on nine plays, including a 31-yard run from Luc Payseur, and a 17-yard run from Boyd down to the one, where Howard again punched it in. Fabian Gutierrez made all three PAT attempts.

Defensively, Justin Bell led the way with eight tackles, Cort Doyle had seven stops and recovered a fourth quarter fumble, and Logan Monroe made six stops and a sack. Buzz Jerde had five tackles, including three stops for loss, and Howard forced a fumble and had a sack. Austin Bell picked off a Saints pass just three plays into the game.

The Friars march on to the TAPPS D1 Regional playoffs this weekend, facing Houston St. Thomas in the same round for a second straight year. The game is scheduled for 6:00 pm Saturday from Rusk's Eagle Stadium.
