DALLAS - The Bishop Lynch volleyball team won their first district game of the year with a 3-1 victory over Nolan Catholic on Tuesday night. Bishop Lynch moves to 22-7, 1-1 on the season and Nolan Catholic remains winless in district with a record of 16-11, 0-3.
The volleyball team celebrated their throwback night on Tuesday night which included playing in the Legacy Gym and dollar hot dogs. The volleyball program has a great history in the Legacy gym, including three state championships and over 350 wins.
Despite all the success in the Legacy Gym, the Friars weren't going to just show up and get a 3-0 win over Nolan. The first set started off great with the Friars going up 5-0, but the Vikings fought back and took over, eventually winning the first set 25-18. Nolan has started district play with two losses, so coming into Bishop Lynch and taking the first set definitely surprised not only the team but the crowd as well.
The Friars, without their top hitter and the recent University of Arkansas commit
Lauryn Lambert, bounced back in a big way in the second set. At one point they were up 18-5 and eventually took the set 25-11 to tie the match up at one apiece.
After the mishap in the first set, the Friars went back to playing the way they have all season long. The third and fourth sets went to the Friars, 25-18 and 25-17. The seniors had a great night collectively, with the top four hitters all being seniors.
Lyric Berry (12),
Ashlyn Zilliken (9),
Liya Girma (6) and
Leah Oyewole (5) were on fire on Tuesday. They also limited their attack errors, combining for only eight.
Jessie Canavan and
Cate Hatfield set up the hitters great all night, each recording 19 assists. Friars had one of their best matches serving, combining for 11 aces. Team leader was Hatfield with four and Canavan with three.
Bishop Lynch will travel to Plano tonight, September 22nd, to face off against district rival John Paul II at 6:00 PM.
