FORT WORTH, TX -- The new year brings the Bishop Lynch women's basketball team a fresh start as they defeated Nolan Catholic 69-38 on Tuesday to earn their first district win of the season.
Adriana Medina and
Aliyah Goins are usually the first two players off the bench but against Nolan they were both put into the starting lineup and both made the most of it. Goins finished with 16 points while Medina added 14, both of which are the player's career highs on the varsity level.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Nolan Catholic jumped out to an early lead 11-7 lead, but about halfway through the first quarter, the Friars settled in. After taking the 12-11 lead, the Friars never looked back for the rest of the game. BL hit two big three-pointers in the first quarter, one by Medina and one by
Alice Thackston that helped the Friars take the 16-11 lead after one quarter.
The second quarter was the Friars' best shooting quarter of the night. As a team, they shot 9-15 (60.0%) from the field while also making three free throws.
Fre Vowels scored seven of her 13 points in the second while Medina added six. BL built their lead to 13 points with a 37-24 halftime score.
The second half was all about the defense for the Friars as BL held Nolan to just eight points in the third and six points in the fourth. They also forced 13 turnovers in the second half which produced 17 points for the Friars.
