Friars push past Eagles behind great individual performances

DALLAS, TX – The Bishop Lynch volleyball team celebrated their 14 seniors in style, securing a crucial 3-1 victory over Legacy Christian Academy. With the win, the Friars improve to 12-12 (2-4 TAPPS 6A-District 2), creating some much-needed breathing room in the race for the district's fourth playoff spot.

Legacy Christian 1, Bishop Lynch 3 (31-29, 23-25, 25-29, 25-17)

Match Highlights:
  • Maddie Pflum had a career night, racking up 20 kills with an impressive .594 hitting percentage. She is the first Friar to record 20 kills in a four set match since Lyric Berry '23 had 20 kills against John Paul II on 9/23/22.
  • Emma Poff (23 assists, 13 digs) and Maia Raleigh (16 assists, 10 digs) both notched double-doubles.
  • The Friars recorded a season-high five players with 10+ digs:  Jenna Westemeier (17), Maddie Smotherman (15), Poff (13), Aven Crosby (10), and Raleigh (10).

HOW IT HAPPENED:

SET 1 | The Friars honored their seniors by fielding an all-senior lineup for most of the first set, which turned out to be a nail-biter. Despite committing eight service errors, Bishop Lynch edged Legacy Christian 31-29 with timely offense from Ava Wennerstrom, Maddie Pflum, and Aven Crosby, who combined for 14 kills on a .393 hitting percentage.

SET 2 | As important as this match was for the Friars, it was even more so for the Eagles. They showed their grit in the second set as they were able to fight off the Friars and the home crowd with a 25-23 set win. Pflum had another great set, recording seven kills with zero errors.

SET 3 | Bishop Lynch quickly jumped back into the driver's seat with a 25-19 third-set win. Pflum once again recorded seven kills with zero errors in the set, but the Friars had a six point advantage on the serve. Smotherman recorded two aces and Crosby had one which, combined with the Eagles' three service errors resulted in the Friars six-point set win.

SET 4 | In the deciding set, the Friars left nothing to chance. Six Friars had a kill in the set and the team hit .269 on their way to a 25-17 set and match win. Charlie Wells led the team with three kills, set up by Poff's team-high seven assists in the set. Poff added three aces in the third set, as well, to seal the Friar victory.
