Pflum reaches 100 career blocks, but Friars drop throwback match to Cardinals

DALLAS, TX --  For just the fourth time in 39 matches, Bishop Lynch (11-10, 1-2) fell to John Paul II (34-8, 3-1) on Tuesday night in the Legacy Gym. Despite scrappy defensive play, the Friars could not keep up with the Cardinals' offense as John Paul II outhit BL .230 to .132 and held a 14-kill advantage.

John Paul II 3, Bishop Lynch 0 (25-15, 25-22, 25-19)

Match Highlights:
  • With one block in the match, junior Maddie Pflum hit the career milestone of 100 blocks.
  • Pflum registered 10 kills, marking the first time she has recorded back-to-back matches with double-digit kills following her 14 in last week's win over Legacy Christian.
  • For just the fourth time this season, the Friars had three players with 10 or more digs: Emma Poff (13), Maddie Smotherman (10), and Jenna Westemeier (10).

HOW IT HAPPENED:

SET 1 | The Cardinals dominated the opening moments, quickly jumping to a 4-0 lead that they never relinquished. John Paul II's hitters had a 12-5 kill advantage, leading to their 25-15 win in the first set.

SET 2 | The Friars found their footing in the second set, keeping pace in a close, back-and-forth battle. Bishop Lynch's offense surged, recording 14 kills—nearly three times their first-set total—led by Maddie Pflum and Aven Crosby who each had four. Despite this, John Paul II edged out the set with 17 kills, winning 25-22.

SET 3 | The Friars demonstrated resilience in the third set, with their scrappy defense keeping the score close. Pflum and Ava Wennerstrom contributed four kills each, while Maddie Smotherman added six digs. However, John Paul II pulled away late, sealing the set and match with a 25-19 win.
