Volleyball starts to find its identity at the Marauder Showcase

FLOWER MOUND, TX -- Once again, the Friars participated in the prestigious Marauder Showcase with nine other Dallas-Fort Worth schools over the weekend. The Friars split their four matches, defeating McKinney North (3-0) and host Marcus (3-0) while dropping games to Frisco Reedy (3-2) and Hebron (3-0).

Still  early in the season, the Friars continue to find their identity with so many new faces in the squad. Though the Friars step onto the court wanting to win every match they play, losses early in the season can help the team learn to play together and find their groove come district play.

Maia Raleigh had a stellar weekend as she was named to the All-Showcase team. The sophomore's rookie campaign ended early last season due to injury, so it's great to see the second-year player start the season in great form.

McKinney North
The Friars opened the showcase against the Bulldogs, who went 21-13 last year and advanced to the UIL 5A Regional Quarterfinals in 2023. Led by Madison Pflum and Kylie Love, Bishop Lynch swept McKinney North. Pflum and Love had nine kills, while Pflum had a .368 hitting percentage. Maia Raleigh was an assist machine, as she delivering a career-high 21 in the match while also collecting ten digs to record her first double-double. Maddie Smotherman also recorded ten digs to tie the team-high with Raleigh.

Frisco Reedy
It was a start to forget for the Friars in their second and final match of the first day. They quickly fell behind two sets to zero before fighting back to take the third set 27-25. They would continue to fight to force a fifth set after a 25-21 win in the fourth set but would run out of gas and fall in five to the Lions. Reedy advanced to the Regional Finals last season in UIL 5A after going 23-14.

Marcus
Much like the first day, the Friars came out hot against the host team. The Friars hit an outstanding .293% as a team, with 33 kills and only nine errors. The underclassman pair of Kylie Love and Charlotte Wells combined for 15 kills on a mind-blowing .600 hitting percentage. The Friars as a team had eight blocks, overwhelming the Marauders to a 3-0 sweep.

Hebron
In the finale, the Friars faced off against the toughest opponent all weekend. It showed on the court as BL suffered its first 3-0 season loss. A bright spot for the Friars was senior Ava Wennerstrom, who collected ten kills and had a .381 hitting percentage. Unfortunately, the rest of the team had 17 kills with a -0.067 hitting percentage.

NEXT UP:
The Battle of Peavy takes place tomorrow, August 20, as the Friars take on Bryan Adams. First serve is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT.
