Hudson's Late Touchdown Seals Bishop Lynch's Spot in Regionals

DALLAS – With 1:52 left and the season hanging in the balance, Hunter Hudson made the play of his life. The senior hauled in a sensational touchdown grab from Matias Leon to give Bishop Lynch a 35-34 lead—one the Friars would protect to advance to the TAPPS Division I regional round.

Hudson entered last Friday night without a touchdown catch this season. He left as a viral sensation, delivering a moment that will be replayed, shared, retweeted, and remembered—a highlight-reel grab that clinched a regional spot and instantly became one of the greatest catches in recent Bishop Lynch history.

The Friars' offense had a roller-coaster night, piling up 448 total yards but also committing two turnovers, including a pick-six that swung momentum at the end of the first half. Senior Ishmael Muhammad continued to shine in his expanded offensive role, recording his second straight 100-yard rushing performance. The Wyoming commit finished with 101 yards and a touchdown. Junior Akani Cruz Berrios added a strong night of his own, rushing for 125 yards and a score.

Leon finished with 195 passing yards, with 95 of them going to freshman standout Zack Williams, who recorded nine catches, including another jaw-dropping touchdown—arguably the second-best catch of the night—in the back-left corner of the north end zone at Roffino.

Defensively, the Friar linebackers were everywhere. Alex Finley and Willy Patterson combined for 30 tackles (Finley 17, Patterson 13). Senior captain Asher Wheatly was a force on the defensive line, finishing with eight tackles and a sack. Adan Fernandez also added a sack to round out a strong night for the front seven.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The opening quarter flew by thanks to Bishop Lynch's dominant ground game. The Friars struck first when Cruz Berrios powered in a 2-yard touchdown run with just over four minutes left. The score was set up by a dazzling catch-and-run from Williams, who made at least five Button defenders miss.

BL entered the second quarter up 7-0, but the Buttons quickly responded with a field goal to make it 7-3. The Friars answered right back—this time with Williams taking a jet sweep from the 7-yard line into the end zone to make it 14-3 after a Caleb Malouf PAT.

Everything seemed to be going Bishop Lynch's way until two late interceptions, including a pick-six, flipped the game. Suddenly, the Friars entered the locker room trailing 17-14.

After several weeks of slow third quarters, the Friars completely flipped the script. Muhammad broke loose for a 38-yard touchdown, and Williams followed with his acrobatic TD grab to push the lead to 28-17. Central Catholic added a field goal late, trimming the Friars' advantage to 28-20 entering the fourth.

Momentum swung again as the Buttons fought back, scoring twice to take a 34-28 lead. The Friars struggled offensively for much of the quarter—until their final drive.

With just over two minutes remaining, BL finally broke through when Leon escaped a sack, rolled left, and launched a 40-yard strike to Ethan Perkinswho elevated for a spectacular grab that set up the Friars in the red zone. A few plays later, Leon found Hudson for the season-saving touchdown, and Malouf's PAT put BL ahead 35-34.

Central Catholic still had time, but the Friars slammed the door shut. On the ensuing kickoff, Luke Hammonds forced a fumble, and Mason Schofer recovered, allowing Bishop Lynch to drain the clock and escape with the win.
