Friars Defeat John Paul II, Advance to State Tournament for First Time Since 2019-20

DALLAS — The No. 1-seeded Bishop Lynch men's soccer team punched its ticket to the TAPPS Division I State Tournament on Thursday night, defeating John Paul II High School at Roffino Stadium. The victory sends the Friars to state for the first time since the 2019-20 season.

It marked the third win over the Cardinals this year, following a 4-1 victory on January 13 and a 5-3 penalty kick triumph on February 2.

With their 13th win of the season, Bishop Lynch (13-4-2) secured its highest win total under head coach Stewart Brown and matched its most victories since 2018-19.

Goals (Assists)
7' Bishop Lynch — Moises Bernabe (Aziel Moreno)
15' Bishop Lynch — Moises Bernabe (Julian Neuman)
44' Bishop Lynch — Geovany Flores (Nikolas Bartkoski)
78' Bishop Lynch — Nikolas Bartkoski (Geovany Flores)

HOW IT HAPPENED

The TAPPS Regional Final was one of the most physical matches of the season. The teams combined for 30 fouls, two yellow cards, and one red card in the 80-minute contest. Bishop Lynch controlled the tempo throughout, holding 53% possession and outpassing John Paul II 266-177.

The Friars' precision passing paid off early. In the seventh minute, a crisp sequence between Bernabe, Gaby Bonet, and Moreno returned to Bernabe, who beat his defender and finished cleanly to open the scoring.

Eight minutes later, Bernabe struck again. Julian Neuman delivered a well-timed pass into the box, setting up a one-on-one opportunity that Bernabe calmly converted to make it 2-0 heading into halftime.

Bishop Lynch continued its dominance in the second half, outshooting the Cardinals 14-8 while playing with a man advantage after the John Paul II goalkeeper received a red card.

The third goal came off a corner kick when Bartkoski found an unmarked Flores outside the 18-yard box. Flores took a touch and delivered a clinical finish into the upper corner to extend the lead.

Bartkoski later sealed the win with an impressive individual effort on the right side, weaving through defenders before striking the final goal to secure the 4-0 victory.
