PLANO — Bishop Lynch had second place Prestonwood Christian on the ropes Tuesday, but couldn't land the knockout blow, falling to the Lions in a five-set thriller.
After dropping the first set 25-22, the Lady Friars (18-13, 4-5) roared back to win the next two by scores of 25-15 and 25-23. Prestonwood (23-7, 7-2) closed out the match and clinched the district's No. 2 seed with wins in the fourth (25-20) and fifth sets (15-9).
That sets up a huge regular season finale Thursday in the Competition Gym when the Lady Friars host Ursuline (23-14, 4-5) at 6:00 pm. The winner clinches the No. 3 seed and a first-round bye, while a loss for the Lady Friars would put them as the No. 5 seed and force a play-in game against the No. 4 seed from District 1.
Leah Oyewole led the team with 13 kills while
Lyric Berry and
Emily Castleman each had 10. Berry also had a team-high three blocks.
Alex Galicia totaled 27 assists,
Elizabeth Edwards set 19 assists to go with 11 digs, and
Charlotte Hain had a team-high 22 digs.
Thursday's regular season finale is Senior Night as well as Future Friar Night at Bishop Lynch. All current students are admitted free with student ID, and all kids in grades K-8 will also receive free admission.
In other district action Tuesday, Parish Episcopal swept Bishop Dunne to clinch the district title, while Ursuline topped John Paul II in four sets. Going into the final night of district games, Ursuline can finish third with a win or fourth with a loss, John Paul II can finish fourth or fifth, and the Lady Friars will finish either third (with a win), or fifth (with a loss).
