FRISCO — Less than a week after proving they could come from behind to win, the Friars showed they could also preserve a lead and hold off a determined opponent with Thursday's 41-38 win over Centennial.
The Friars (2-1) led 21-10 in the third period, then traded blows with the Titans (0-3) as the two teams combined for seven touchdowns over the last 16 minutes of game time.
Dillon Moncier returned an interception 54 yards for a score to put the Friars up 41-31 with 2:16 to play, and
Westin Walls recovered an onside kick with 11 seconds remaining to secure a second straight win.
Darries Boyd ran for 196 yards and a pair of scores while
Isaiah Schmidtke rushed for 114 yards and touchdowns of 13 and 40 yards on just eight carries. The Friars totaled 322 yards and 7.0 yards per carry on the ground. Overall, the offense put up 473 yards.
The defense limited Centennial to minus-6 yards on 21 carries while giving up 380 yards through the air as the Titans aired it out 58 times. The Titans may have found the end zone five times through the air, but the Friars collected four interceptions as well, including a pair by Moncier.
Cort Doyle had a game-high 13 tackles,
Austin Bell had eight and an interception, and
Justin Bell picked off a pass to go with seven tackles and two stops for loss.
Caleb Williams recorded the Friars' only sack of the contest, his fourth of the season.
