With a home crowd behind them and a chance to move up the district ladder Thursday, the Lady Friars fought hard in four sets against rival Prestonwood Christian but fell short in a 3-1 loss. Bishop Lynch (15-11, 1-3) fell to fifth place in the league while Prestonwood (17-6, 3-1) took sole possession of second with a win by scores of 25-21, 25-22, 18-25, and 25-15.
The Lady Friars were able to close considerable gaps in the first two sets but fell just a few points short and fell in a 2-0 hole, before notching a win in a dominant third set. PCA left no doubt in the deciding fourth set, roaring out to a 10-1 lead and cruising to a 10-point win.
Lyric Berry had team-highs of nine kills and five blocks,
Alex Galicia led the squad in assists (14), and service aces (2), and
Jenny Canavan had 14 digs to pace the defense.Â
Katie Blomberg posted seven digs and six kills,
Sydney Broussard had 13 digs,
Elizabeth Edwards had six assists.
Emma Cuneo and
Emily Castleman each had three blocks while
Leah Oyewole notched five kills.
The loss – coupled with John Paul II's 3-2 win over Ursuline – dropped Bishop Lynch into fifth and created a two-way tie for third between the Cardinals and Bears. Parish Episcopal swept Bishop Dunne on Thursday to remain in first while assuring the Falcons would stay winless.
The Lady Friars face a challenge Tuesday in their next match, traveling to Ursuline to face the Bears (19-11, 2-2), who are unbeaten (5-0) at home. The sub-varsity matches are scheduled for 5:00 PM, followed by the varsity at approximately 6:00 PM.
