State meet performance wraps up banner year for BL swim program

When the Bishop Lynch swim teams concluded their competition at last week's TAPPS State Championships, both the boys and girls had capped off a season with some amazing marks set, team goals met, and bars set high for future Friar swimmers.

The girls placed second at state with 213 points, their best team finish at state since a runner-up finish in 2004, and 24 points better than their projected total entering Friday's meet. The boys placed 10th at state with 104.5 points, putting together a respectable showing after losing several members to graduation and transfer.

Hadley Beeson and Stella Todd continued their assault on the school record book, setting new marks in the 100 Free and 500 Free, respectively. Todd's performance Friday set a new pool record as well and would earn gold in the 200 IM in addition to the 500 Free. Beeson was first in the 200 Free and second in the 100 Fly. Lindsay Hudspeth also earned an individual medal, capturing third in the 200 IM.

Hudspeth, Beeson, and Todd joined Sophie Robertson to take silver in the 200 Medley Relay, the same foursome that won gold in the 400 Free Relay by more than three seconds. A link to the full state meet results and team point totals can be found at the end of the article.

The girls posted a long list of achievements in the season, with their first undefeated dual record in recent history, first regional title in nine years, a Female Swimmer of the Meet award for Todd at the regional meet, as well as the school records and state runner-up finish. The boys posted a respectable 8-3 dual meet record and finished second at regionals, just three points shy of a regional three-peat.

Overall, 18 of 19 swimmers improved on their times from regionals in at least one event, with 73 percent of swimmers faster in the state meet than regionals two weeks prior. The teams improved almost an entire minute on their combined swim times after dropping more than two minutes at regionals.

The entire swim program, from the coaches and parents to the swimmers themselves, deserves a ton of praise for their achievements during the 2019-2020 season. Congratulations, Friars!!
