Dallas Christian pulls away in the second half to defeat the Friars

Box Score MESQUITE - Bishop Lynch opened their 2021 season with a 42-14 loss against the 2020 TAPPS Division II runner-up Dallas Christian last Friday night at Wheeler Field.

The Friars opened up the game by forcing a turnover on the opening Charger drive. With a short field to manage, Isaiah Schmidtke scored on a 2-yard touchdown run to put the Friars up 7-0 in the first quarter.

The Friars' defense would continue to make big plays in the first quarter. Webster Walls got a big third-down sack when the Chargers were deep in BL territory. On the very next play, John Paul Savant got another sack to give the ball back to the Friars' offense.

After the first quarter, BL was up 7-0. The Chargers would score halfway through the second quarter and miss the extra point to make it 7-6, BL. The Friars' offense would then go on their best drive of the evening. Cooper Alford would find Schmidtke for a 34-yard gain on a great screen pass. He would later find Juan Oliva, who turned a quick pass into a 25-yard gain. To finish off the drive, Cooper would hit Kason McFadden across the middle for a 15-yard touchdown. Henry Nyhart would hit the extra point to give the Friars a 14-6 lead with a little over two minutes until halftime. The Chargers would go into their two-minute drill and drive down the field to score a touchdown with only 12 seconds left in the half. They would convert the two-point conversion to tie it up going into halftime.

In the second half, the Friars didn't have enough in the tank to keep up with Dallas Christian. The Chargers would score the final 35 points in the game, including a late touchdown to go up 42-14. The Friars never quit on the night and continued to make some great plays in the second half. Schmidtke would be a part of another turnover on defense by grabbing an interception, and Walls would continue to be havoc in the backfield getting another sack.

Isaiah Schmidtke would finish the game with 68 total scrimmage yards, one touchdown, one fumble recovery, one interception and numerous tackles.

Next Up: Bishop Lynch will have their home opener this Friday at Roffino Stadium against Fort Worth Christian.
