DALLAS - The Bishop Lynch volleyball team bounced back from their district defeat last week with a 3-1 victory over rival Ursuline Academy on Tuesday night.
The Bears came in sitting number two in district with a 4-1 record and playing really good volleyball. The Friars were coming off a disappointing game against Parish and in third place with a 3-2 record.
The Friars came out with something to prove, and with a mighty crowd behind them, they did just that. At one point BL was up 22-12 in the first set and eventually took the set 25-17. The Friar Nation effect was certainly in full tilt as Ursuline had 11 errors in the first set.
Paloma Gonzalez led the Friars with three kills in the first.
The second set, the Friars once again jumped out to a big lead. The Bears had to use their first timeout when BL doubled them up 14-7. Five athletes had exactly two kills in the second set as the Friars were spreading out the offense. After the timeout, UA did creep back into the game, getting as close as two points at 16-14. But BL would refocus and close out the set on a 9-7 run and take the second set 25-21.
Even after falling down 2-0 and playing on the road, the Bears fought back hard in the third set. Even after trailing 22-19 in the third set, Ursuline persevered and came back to win 28-26, forcing a fourth set. Ursuline hit the ball with extreme success, having match highs in the third set for both kills (15) and hitting percentage (.250).
The good news for UA was they forced a fourth set, the bad news was
Lauryn Lambert came alive in the fourth set with a few thunderous kills. With nine of her 15 kills in the set, the Friars took the fourth set 25-19 and the match 3-1.
Both Lambert and
Cate Hatfield had double-doubles Tuesday night. Lambert had 15 kills and 12 digs while Hatfield had 20 assists and 12 digs. The BL defense was outstanding last night with four Friars getting double-digit kills:
Maddie Smotherman (17),
Delaney Moon (13), Lambert (12) and Hatfield (12).
Not only did the back row play great defense, but the front row did oustanding as well.
Lyric Berry led the way with five blocks and
Paloma Gonzalez had four.
Jessie Canavan tied a team season high of five aces as well.
