FRISCO -
Logan Epes played one of his best games in a Friar uniform on Saturday night to lead the Friars to the 53-48 upset over Prestonwood in the TAPPS 6A Regionals. Epes finished the night with 25 points and hit five three-pointers.
The Friars opened up the game with great intensity on both ends of the court. Unfortunately, the Friars weren't shooting the ball well. This resulted in a 12-7 deficit going into the second quarter. The second quarter, like it was against Midland Christian in the Area Playoff game, is when things started to click for BL.
Braxton Teal scored seven of his 10 points in the second, including a three-pointer to make it 18-15 Friars. Epes would hit two threes, and Davis would add four points in the second quarter to give BL a 24-21 halftime lead.
The men would add to their narrow advantage and go into the fourth quarter with a 38-33 lead behind Epes' eight third-quarter points. The biggest play of the night, though, might have been when Epes converted an old-fashioned three-point play late with 2:30 left in the game. BL held a 45-44 lead and was inbounding the ball when Coach
Kyle May drew up a dynamic play that left
Brice Davis open on a heave down the court. Davis would miss the contested layup, and Prestonwood thought they would have the ball down by one, but Epes wouldn't let that happen. He trailed the play, and when Davis missed the shot, he jumped and grabbed the rebound over the Lion defender and put back the layup with the foul. He hit the free throw to make it 48-44 BL.
After the Epes and-one play to give the Friars a four-point lead, great defense and makes at the free-throw line secured the victory and a trip to the semi-finals for the second consecutive season.
Brice Davis finished the game with 13 points, while Teal finished with 10.
Grayson Bell and
Sean Calloway each had two points.
With this victory, the Friars were crowned Regional Champions.
Logan Epes and
Brice Davis were each named to the Regional All-Tournament team,
Bishop Lynch will now face off against John Paul II in the TAPPS 6A semi-finals on Friday, March 4th at 6:00 PM in Waco. This will be a rematch of last season's state semi-final, where
