In front of an incredible crowd, Friars drop home opener to Plano West

DALLAS - The Bishop Lynch volleyball team opened their much anticipated 2022 season in front of their rowdy home crowd on Tuesday night against highly rated Plano West. The Wolf Pack defeated the Friars 3-0 in a primarily competitive game from start to finish. Plano West made multiple preseason top 10 lists over the past few weeks, including being ranked #7 by the Dallas Morning News for 6A teams. The Dallas Morning News ranked Bishop Lynch as the #9 team in the 5A and others classification.

Plano West came ready to play in the first set, taking an early lead and forcing BL to fight from behind the entire set. The Friars kept it relatively close, but with so many errors, they would drop the first set 25-20. BL had 11 attack errors and five serve receive errors in the first set, which hindered their ability to get true momentum back in the set.

The second set was by far the most entertaining set of the night, with big swings coming from both teams, especially Lauryn Lambert, who had 11 of her game-high 15 kills in the second set alone. The entire team hit well in this set, hitting a percentage of .463 and limiting their attack errors to just four. They also improved on their serve receive errors, having only three in the set. What hurt the ladies in this set was the service errors. They had a total of seven, which allowed Plano West to stick around and eventually take the back and forth set 30-28.

In the third and final set, Plano West took charge and never looked back, taking the set 25-13 and the game 3-0.

Despite losing 3-0, the Friars held up well against the Wolf Pack. It goes without saying that whoever commits the most errors will be defeated, but this was the season's first game against a formidable opponent. This match would have been entirely different if the Friars could have eliminated just a few errors. If you add up service errors, serve receive errors and attack errors, the Friars had 41 compared to Plano West's 24.

The Friars will undoubtedly continue to sharpen their game in practices to come, and the next time you see them on the court will be at the Marcus Showcase this Friday, August 12th.
