Friars finish up non-district play with a sweep over Lake Highlands

DALLAS - Bishop Lynch (21-6) defeated Lake Highlands (12-6) 3-0 on Tuesday night in front of the best Friar Nation crowd we have seen all season.

Lyric Berry began her big night strong, finishing with five kills alone in the first. Paloma Gonzalez also sparked the Friars early with massive kills, having four in the first. Cate Hatfield had seven of her 13 assists in the first and the offense was hitting on all cylinders. Defensively, the Friars limited their mistakes as well, only having one serve receive error, which led to them cruising to a 25-16 first-set win.

The second set started dicey for the black and white. Lake Highlands played their best volleyball in the second and stormed out to a 14-5 lead. Through some fortunate errors and big hits, the Friars found themselves right back into the set. The biggest hit of the match might have come from Berry whose kill to make it 16-10 electrified both the team and Friar Nation and sparked the Friar comeback. After tying it up at 20 and taking a 24-23 lead, Berry finished off the set with a block to give BL a 2-0 lead over the Wildcats.

In the third set, the Friars dominated, and even with a comeback effort by Lake Highlands, BL won the third set 25-16 to secure the sweep. Bishop Lynch now has won 13 straight sets dating back to August 27th against Lake Travis.

Jessie Canavan had a great match against Lake Highlands, leading the team in assists with 16. Maddie Smotherman had a stellar night as well, leading the team in digs with 12 and also adding five assists. Berry led the team with 12 kills, with Lauryn Lambert adding nine and Leah Oyewole having seven.

The Friars will need to continue to clean up their serving errors. In their victory over Lake Highlands, they accumulated nine serving errors and their serving percentage was just 87.8%. They will need to clean those simple errors up as they start district play next week at Prestonwood, who many people believe is the team to beat this year.

The Friars haven't defeated Prestonwood in 11 straight games, with the last win coming in 2017. No one on the roster has won against Prestonwood so it will be a tough start to district. The game will be played in Plano next Tuesday, September 13th, at 6:00 PM.
