Howell’s career afternoon leads Friars to big win over Nolan Catholic in regular season finale

DALLAS, TX -- Legend Howell has had many big games for the Friars in his young career, but none were bigger than his performance on Saturday afternoon to help Bishop Lynch defeat Nolan Catholic 59-21.

Howell's stat line is something you see in video games- 412 total yards with seven touchdowns. Yes, the sophomore accounted for seven total touchdowns on Saturday. He completed 21-27 passes for 304 yards and six touchdowns while running for 108 on eight carries for one touchdown.

He did not do everything alone as BL's wide receivers made some great plays and the offensive line gave Howell time to dissect the defense while opening up running holes for the running backs. Ty Bradley had seven catches for 165 yards and two touchdowns while Ishmael Muhammed not only scored his first career touchdown but scored twice on both his two receptions.

In total, the Friars had 270 yards rushing with a platoon at running back. Kobie Moreland led the way as the sophomore rushed seven times for 88 yards. Freshman Nick Payne continued his late-season spark and found the end zone again while rushing for 28 yards.

Defensively, the Friars played aggressive and flew all over the field. Colton Monroe once again recorded double-digit tackles with a game-high 13 and 2.0 tackles for loss. John Medaris continued his strong season at cornerback, recording two pass deflections.

Eric Gonzalez has had an outstanding season as the Friars kicker, and that continued on Saturday as the junior went 9-9 on extra points and made his only field goal attempt.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Friars trailed 7-0 after the first quarter and there was a little uneasiness in the air. Nolan got the ball first and had a long drive, eating up most of the clock. The Friars' lone possession in the first quarter ended in an untimely fumble.

The second quarter is when things changed in a big way for BL. It may have been the best quarter of football the entire team has played all season as they outscored Nolan 35-7. Friars got on the scoreboard with a Howell to Muhammad 5-yard pass and catch and didn't look back. After a defensive stop, Howell connected with Ty Bradley on a 57-yard double-move touchdown. Later, Howell found Aiden McGinnis for his third touchdown pass of the quarter to make it 21-7 Friars.

Nolan took advantage of the aggressive play from the BL defense and scored on a nice screen-and-go to make it 21-14, but that was it for the Nolan offense. Howell would respond with the longest rush of his career in a 58-yard scramble touchdown run to make it 28-14 BL. Bradley would catch his second touchdown pass of the quarter on a beautiful goal-line fade to close out the half with a score of 35-14.

In the second half, the Friars offense continued to put on a show. In the third quarter, Nick Payne scored on a 2-yard rush along with Muhammad's second touchdown reception. In the fourth quarter, Howell found Charles Sharpe on a screen pass and the sophomore wideout made a couple of people miss on his way for a 45-yard touchdown to make it 59-14.
