Friars suffer first sweep of district play against rival Ursuline

DALLAS, TX -- If you play sports long enough, you'll have a day that just doesn't go your way. That was last night for the Bishop Lynch volleyball team. Last night Bishop Lynch (19-13, 5-2) traveled to Jane Neuhoff Athletic Center and got swept by Ursuline Academy (17-7, 4-3) less than a month after the Friars swept the Bears. This victory was the first time Ursuline had defeated Bishop Lynch since 2019.

The Friars never really got things going in any set last night, dropping them 25-14, 25-20 and 25-21. Ursuline overwhelmed BL's defense as they recorded 46 kills to our 28 while hitting .315 to our .095.

Ava Wennerstrom led the Friars in kills with seven while Madison Pflum recorded five.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Bears came out with energy to start the match and quickly took a 9-1 lead before the Friars had to use their final timeout in the set. They did not slow down after the timeouts, taking the first set 25-14 while hitting a game-high .333 as a team.

The second set was more of the same, as the home team got out to a quick 10-4 advantage. The Friars fought back to make it 20-17 with great kills from Pflum and Wennerstrom, but Ursuline found a way to slow the Friars' comeback and took the second set 25-20.

The third set was the most competitive between the two teams. Ursuline began to pull away late in the third with an 18-14 lead which caused a Friar timeout. After the timeout, the Friars showed some fight and pulled within two points at 22-20. In the end, Ursuline won 25-21 in front of their home crowd to sweep the Friars.
