SAN ANTONIO, TX -- The Bishop Lynch volleyball team will take on Antonian College Preparatory High School in the TAPPS 6A Volleyball Regionals on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in Mark Recko Gymnasium. This is a rematch of the TAPPS State Semi-Finals from last season where the Friars defeated the Apaches 3-0.

History
The Friars and Apaches have met seven times since 2008 in some great competitive matches. Bishop Lynch has won four (2008, 2014, 2016, 2022) of those seven matches while Antonian has won three (2009, 2010, 2017). You can view more information on the history here.

Get to know Bishop Lynch:
Bishop Lynch finished fourth in TAPPS 6A - District 1 with a 22-15 record and went 8-4 in district play. The Friars played in numerous prestigious tournaments such as the Marcus Showcase, Allen Tournament, and Volleypalooza. The Friars were matched up against The Village School in the TAPPS area round and defeated them 3-0. You can read that recap here.

Get to know Antonian:
Antonian finished first in TAPPS 6A - District 2 with a 40-8 record and went undefeated in district play, going 12-0. Because of their number one seed, the Apaches received a bye in the area round and get to host in the regionals.

Common Opponents
The Friars and the Apaches have only played one common opponent this season and that is The Village School. Antonian defeated The Village School twice in the regular season, both matches being sweeps. Bishop Lynch defeated The Village School 3-0 on Monday in the TAPPS area playoff round.

The first match against the Vikings on 9/22, Antonian won 25-5, 25-8, 25-5. In their second match on 10/13, the Apaches won 25-20, 25-11, 25-10. The Friars defeated the Vikings 25-15, 25-21, 25-18.

Players to Watch:

Bishop Lynch:
# 10 Cate Hatfield - The senior William & Mary commit can and has done it all for the Friars this season. She is third on the team in kills (191), first in assists (555), first in aces (50), third in digs (253), and fourth in blocks (27). Hatfield finished 25th in the metroplex in assists in the regular season. She will need to continue her strong season for the Friars to upset the Apaches.

#17 Madison Pflum - The sophomore has quietly had a great back half of the season. She led the team in hitting percentage (.331) and blocks (19) in district play. Her length and jumping ability will be a big factor in trying to slow down the Apache attack on Saturday morning.

#8 Riley Seitz - Much like Pflum, Seitz's size will come into play in the regional match. Antonian has a great offense and the Friars will need the seniors clocking ability to be at an all-time high for the Friars to win.

Antonian:
# 7 Kalina Calvillo - The senior outside hitter has had an outstanding 2023 season, much like last year. She once again leads the team in kills (537) but has dipped in hitting percentage from .343 last year to .284 this season. Her 537 kills is 319 more than the next player on the team so the Apache offense runs through Calvillo.

#14 Sofia Scheuerman - The senior middle has been a force on the defensive side of the net for the Apaches. She has recorded 108 blocks on the year, an incredible feat. To put that into perspective, the Friars as a team have 231 total blocks and our team leader is Riley Seitz with 58.

Keys to the Match:

Bishop Lynch: It all comes down to playing at the net for the Friars. If the front row can produce enough kills and make it difficult on the Apache hitters, the Friars have a great shot at the upset. The back line and serving ability give the black and white a chance.

Antonian: You don't win 40 matches by accident, no matter the schedule. If the number one-seeded Apaches can play to their level, it will be very difficult for them to drop this one. They will most likely feed Calvillo all match until the Friars find a way to slow her down.
