Bishop Lynch vs Midland Christian: Game Preview

Bishop Lynch High School (TAPPS 1-District 1) will host its fourth home game of 2023, this week against Midland Christian School (TAPPS 2-District 1), at 7:00 p.m. tonight in Roffino Stadium. This is a big week for BLHS as the Friars will celebrate their annual Homecoming game. The Friars (1-4, 0-0) are coming off their toughest defeat of the season with a 56-7 loss to Liberty Christian last Friday. Midland Christian (1-3, 0-0) is coming in on a high after earning their first victory of the year last week 37-24 over Del Rio.

2023 Common Opponents:
The Friars and the Mustangs share only one opponent this season and that is Liberty Christian. The Friars played them last week while Midland Christian takes on the Warriors on October 13.

History:
Bishop Lynch and Midland Christian have met six times on the gridiron since 2002. The Friars hold a 4-2 advantage though the Mustangs won the last bout 42-7 in 2021.

Players to Watch:
Midland Christian:
#5 Colton Newsom: The senior quarterback is as solid as it gets, leading the team in passing and rushing this season. He has accumulated over 1,100 yards this year, 750 passing and 353 rushing. Newsom has thrown for seven touchdowns and rushed for two.

#12 Brady Young: It's rare to see a sophomore make such an impact on the defensive side of the ball but Young has done just that. The linebacker leads the team in tackles with 11.3 per game and 4.0 tackles for loss and a sack.

Bishop Lynch:
#27 Godswill Giadolor: Giadolor's streak of 100+ rushing yards came to an end last week though not for the lack of hard running. The senior running back leads the team in rushing yards and touchdowns and will once again be called upon for a huge night.

#14 William Estes: The junior has played both running back and linebacker this year and had his best career defensive game last week against Liberty Christian, totaling a career-high 12 tackles. Look for the playmaker to create a big play on defense tonight with his speed.

Keys to the Game:
Midland Christian: The Mustangs are coming into tonight's game with a lot of confidence after winning their first game of the season last week. They are very similar to the Friars as their offense can put up points (21 PPG). Look for their offense to have a steady dose of rushing attempts.

Bishop Lynch: Much like Midland Christian, both defenses will be selling out to stop the run. Midland ran for 272 yards last week in their win and will want to try to do the same tonight. If the BL defense can create a couple of stops, the Friars have a good shot of walking away with a Homecoming victory.
