Friars win home opener for the second consecutive season with sweep over Horn

DALLAS, TX -- You know how the adage goes, "History always repeats itself." That remained true in every sense of the saying as the Bishop Lynch volleyball team won their season opener for the second consecutive year with a 3-0 sweep over Mesquite Horn on Tuesday night. With the victory, the Friars remain unbeaten by the Jaguars since 2010, going 4-0 in that time.

The Friars graduated many contributors from last year's team, but new faces bring new opportunities. Last night highlighted BL's depth and versatility as all 18 team members saw action, including 14 in two or more sets. Maddie Pflum and Charlie Wells each collected six kills to lead the team that "totaled 31 on the evening with a .222 hitting percentage.

Returning varsity member Maia Raleigh and newcomer to the squad Emma Poff led the team in assists, as each lady had 11 on the night. Poff not only had great passes setting up her teammates, but she tied with Pflum for a team-high of three aces on the night.

Maddie Smotherman, the veteran, and most experienced team member had a great night on the court as she finished with 13 digs, two assists, one ace, and a rare kill. She is looking to solidify her name in the Bishop Lynch record books this season as she hopes to reach 1,500 digs, 500 assists, and potentially 150 career matches played.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The first set was the most competitive as each team was getting out their first match jitters. Smotherman, Pflum, Raleigh, Aven Crosby, Ava Wennerstrom, and Kylie Love started the match for the black and white. Pflum and Love each had their best hitting set in the first, finishing off four kills. The Friars struggled to pull away due to five serving errors but eventually took the set 25-22.

Bishop Lynch's dominance started to show in the second set as they quickly jumped to a 7-3 advantage. Charlie Wells led the team with three kills in the set, while Taylor Smith and Aven Crosby each collected two. The Friars also served much better in the set and had four aces on their way to a 25-15 set win.

The third and final set was the same for BLVB as they defeated the Jaguars 25-14 to take the opening match in sweep form. Five ladies collected a kill in the third set, led by Ave Wennerstrom, who found her form late and had a team-high of three.
