Friars Clip Falcons to Win Season Opener for First Time Since 2017

DALLAS, TX -- In a commanding start to the 2024 football season, the Bishop Lynch Friars (1-0) dominated their long-time rivals, the Bishop Dunne Falcons (0-1), with a resounding 49-0 victory at a packed Roffino Stadium last Friday night. From the opening kickoff, the Friars showcased their superiority on both sides of the ball on their way to victory.

The Friars couldn't have asked for a better start to the game, receiving the opening kickoff and storming down to the Falcon 10-yard line. Senior captain Aiden McGinnis capped off the impressive drive with a 1-yard touchdown run, making it 7-0. Later in the first quarter, William Estes barreled into the endzone with another 1-yard touchdown run, extending the lead to 14-0.

The Falcon offense struggled all night under the relentless pressure of the Friars' defense. Led by Weston Pomykal, who recorded 1.5 sacks, the Friars combined for 4.5 sacks throughout the night—the most in a single game for the Friar defense since 2019. Pomykal finished the game with a team-high six tackles, 4.0 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, and one pass breakup.

The score reached 35-0 by halftime, thanks to two touchdown passes from Matias Leon to Ty Bradley. The first was a beautiful fade down the home sideline, with Bradley grabbing the ball and getting one foot down. The second came on fourth down, where Leon scrambled before finding a wide-open Bradley in the middle of the field, who caught the ball and ran untouched into the endzone.
The second half was more of the same, with the Friars' offense finding the endzone twice—once on a rushing touchdown by John Medaris and again on an Ishmael Muhammad reception from Armando Aguilera.

The defense continued to wreak havoc, including forcing their first turnover of the game when Alec Salazar snagged his first career interception.
