Friars Win Third Straight, Defeat Trinity Christian 49–9

| By:
ADDISON, Texas – The Bishop Lynch football team continued its midseason surge on Thursday night, rolling past Trinity Christian Academy with a 49–9 district victory at Tom Landry Stadium. The win marks the third straight TAPPS district victory for the Friars, improving their record to 5–3 overall and 3–1 in district play.

The Friar defense was once again dominant, holding its second consecutive district opponent under 10 points for the first time since 2017, when Bishop Lynch held John Paul II (0), Liberty Christian (0), and Nolan Catholic (3) to a combined total of just three points.

Leading the charge defensively, Willy Patterson was everywhere for the Friars, tallying a team-high 14 tackles. Luke Hammonds and Nick Payne each came up with an interception, and the defense finished with three sacks — two from Hammonds and one from Asher Wheatley.

Offensively, Bishop Lynch's balance and explosiveness were again on full display. The Friars have now scored 28 or more points in every game but one this season and are averaging 40.8 points per contest. Quarterback Matias Leon had another standout performance, throwing for 345 yards and five touchdowns, while Akani Cruz Berrios powered the ground game with 82 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

Leon's top targets were Zack Williams and Nick Payne, who each found the end zone twice. Williams finished with six catches for 117 yards, while Payne hauled in four receptions for 130 yards. Ishmael Muhammad added three catches for 62 yards and a touchdown, while also recording his 100th career reception in the Black and White.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Unlike the past few weeks, Bishop Lynch wasted no time getting on the board in Addison. On the opening drive, Cruz Berrios capped a strong series with a 12-yard touchdown run to make it 7–0 early. After TCA answered with a field goal, the Friars responded immediately as Muhammad made a spectacular effort on a 26-yard touchdown catch, extending the lead to 14–3 late in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Trojans were threatening to score, but Hammonds halted the drive with an interception in the end zone. The Friar offense capitalized as Leon connected with Williams on a 33-yard wheel route touchdown, stretching the lead to 21–3. The defense ended the half on another takeaway — Nick Payne's third interception of the season — to keep the Friars firmly in control at halftime.

The Friars dominated the third quarter to put the game out of reach. Williams hauled in his second touchdown of the night, followed by back-to-back scoring grabs from Payne, giving Bishop Lynch a commanding 40–9 lead heading into the fourth.

In the fourth quarter, Cruz Berrios ended the night just as he started it, punching in a two-yard touchdown run to make it 49–9, the eventual final score.
