Friars Rally in Second Half to Defeat Vikings in Playoff Thriller

FORT WORTH, Texas — After trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Bishop Lynch men's soccer team scored two unanswered goals in the second half to defeat Nolan Catholic 2-1 in the TAPPS Division I area playoff round. The victory propels the Friars into the regional round, where they will face defending state champion John Paul II on Thursday.

Despite losing just one district game in regulation, the Friars traveled to Fort Worth to take on the Vikings at Doskocil Stadium. Playing on their home turf, Nolan Catholic came out confident and assertive, controlling possession early. That pressure paid off as the Vikings connected a string of passes, leading to the opening goal with 18 minutes left in the first half.

Though not an ideal situation, the Friars have grown accustomed to playing from behind this season. However, with their season on the line, the urgency intensified as the clock ticked down. Looking to take control, Bishop Lynch opened the second half aggressively. That energy led to Aziel Moreno finding Jack DeSmeth at the top of the box, where he maneuvered through five defenders before firing a right-footed shot past the keeper to level the match at 1-1 just five minutes into the half.

Momentum often swings in the first five minutes of a half and immediately after a goal, and the Friars capitalized on both. Minutes later, Nikolas Bartkoski played a deep pass to DeSmeth, who connected with Giovanny Flores on the right side, earning a corner kick. The ensuing set piece was executed perfectly—DeSmeth delivered a precise cross to Moises Bernabe, who soared above the defense and placed a powerful header into the net, freezing the Vikings' keeper and giving Bishop Lynch a 2-1 lead 10 minutes into the half.

The Friars maintained their attacking mindset but played smart, disciplined soccer in the final 30 minutes. They created additional scoring opportunities while limiting Nolan Catholic's chances with strong defensive play. The backline held firm, preserving the 2-1 lead and securing a hard-fought road victory.

You can watch all the goals from last night's match below:

DeSmeth: 1-1
Bernabe: 2-1
