Murphy’s Heroics Lift Friars to State Semifinals

DALLAS, Texas – High school sports deliver unforgettable moments, and last night's TAPPS Division I regional match between Bishop Lynch and Parish Episcopal was no exception. In a match that seemed destined for overtime, Madison Murphy's goal in the final minute secured the Friars' place in the state tournament.

On paper, the Friars were the favorites despite Parish winning its district. But for those who read the preview—or remember the matchups from two years ago—it was clear the Panthers play their best against Bishop Lynch. Their speed, size, and physicality made the Friars uncomfortable, and it showed throughout the match.

Bishop Lynch struck early, a critical advantage in a road playoff game. Kat Williamson ignited the attack by finding a streaking Bella Alamo down the right side. Alamo dribbled into the box and sent a precise cross to Murphy, who finished with a perfect touch to put the Friars ahead 1-0.

The Friars dominated possession in the first half, outshooting the Panthers 8-2, but went into the break clinging to their one-goal lead.

The second half started much like the first, with Bishop Lynch controlling the tempo and generating quality chances. However, the Parish goalkeeper and missed opportunities kept the score at 1-0. Tension mounted as time wore on, and the Panthers' counterattack became increasingly dangerous. Fortunately, defender Iyana Axson was a force in the back, repeatedly shutting down Parish's advances.

What had begun to feel inevitable became reality—Parish's lethal counterattack finally broke through. With just under 20 minutes left, the Panthers found the equalizer, tying the match at 1-1.

Bishop Lynch pushed relentlessly in the final 20 minutes, firing 12 second-half shots, but struggled to find the back of the net. Despite outshooting Parish 18-6, the scoreboard remained level as the clock ticked down. With overtime looming, the Friars mounted one final attack in the closing minute.

Ellis Kuntz initiated the play, finding Alamo in the middle of the attacking third. Alamo spun past a defender and spotted Murphy at the top of the box—shockingly unmarked. Delivering a pinpoint pass to Murphy's right foot, Alamo set up the game-winner. Murphy took one touch to control it, then buried the shot inside the near post, lifting the Friars to a thrilling 2-1 victory.

This marks the third consecutive season Bishop Lynch has advanced to the state tournament.
