Friars Push Ursuline to the Final Whistle Despite Tough Breaks

DALLAS, Texas — The Bishop Lynch women's soccer team played an afternoon makeup game against Ursuline Academy yesterday with a chance to become co-district champions. The Friars battled for the full 80 minutes but fell 2-1 despite overcoming some challenging calls.

This matchup has become one of the biggest rivalries in TAPPS, bringing out the best in both teams. The Friars came out strong and controlled the first 20 minutes of the match. This included a free kick from Bella Alamo in the first minute that, if not for a great save by the Ursuline goalkeeper, would have given the Friars a quick 1-0 lead.

Bishop Lynch looked to take the 0-0 tie into halftime, but a strong run by the Bears led to a questionable penalty kick awarded with nine minutes left in the half. The Ursuline striker converted the PK, giving the Friars a 1-0 halftime deficit.

Leadership is key in games like these, and the Friars have strong leaders on the team. Ellis Kuntz, one of the captains, showed her leadership just seven minutes into the second half, scoring the equalizer off a great ball in the box from Kat Williamson. The goal was Kuntz's 10th of the season.

The rest of the match continued as a back-and-forth battle that seemed destined for overtime. However, a near-mirror image of the first half's ending played out late in the second. With just under nine minutes remaining, Friars goalkeeper Alicia Gonzalez collided with an Ursuline forward, resulting in no call. The Bears capitalized on the moment, trickling the ball into the back of the net to take a 2-1 lead.

Despite the tough break, the Friars continued to fight in the final eight minutes but couldn't find another tying goal.
