Football Opens Season with Shootout Win over First Baptist

DALLAS — Bishop Lynch opened the 2025 season in explosive fashion Friday night, defeating back-to-back Division IV state champion First Baptist, 62-48, at the First Baptist Athletic Complex.

The Friars' offense was powered by junior transfer Akani Cruz Berrios, who rushed for 195 yards and five touchdowns on just 14 carries. Senior quarterback Matias Leon was also sharp, completing 10 of 15 passes for 220 yards and two touchdowns while adding 16 rushing yards on three carries. Zack Williams and Nick Payne each hauled in a touchdown reception from Leon, including a 41-yard strike to Williams on the opening drive.

Defensively, senior Willy Patterson led the way with 15 tackles and a forced fumble. Sophomore Atticus Richardson chipped in six tackles, including a sack and a late forced fumble to seal the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Williams opened the scoring with a 41-yard touchdown grab on the Friars' first possession.
  • Cruz Berrios followed with a 54-yard touchdown run, then added a 1-yard score to make it 21-0.
  • First Baptist got on the board late in the first, cutting it to 21-7.
  • On the first play of the second quarter, Leon connected with Payne for a 25-yard touchdown.
  • After a Saints score, Payne immediately answered with a 73-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
  • The Saints closed the half strong, scoring twice — including once as time expired — to make it 35-28 at the break.
  • Cruz Berrios picked up where he left off with a 7-yard touchdown run to start the third quarter.
  • After another Saints score, Cruz Berrios added a 3-yard run and later broke free for a 73-yard touchdown, giving him five on the night.
  • First Baptist scored once more to trim it to 55-41 after three quarters.
  • Junior Lance Tinio capped the night with a touchdown run to put the game away, 62-48.
GAME NOTES
  • Bishop Lynch has now won back-to-back season openers.
  • Cruz Berrios and Tinio became the first Friar running back duo with 100-plus rushing yards in the same game since 2022 (Godswill Giadolor and JP Lacsamana vs. Central Catholic).
  • The 62 points scored were the most surrendered by First Baptist since 2022.
Up Next
The Friars return home Friday, Sept. 5, for their home opener against Midland Christian. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Roffino Stadium. The Mustangs dropped their season opener, 17-7, to Graham.
