Mother Nature Halts the Friars’ Comeback Attempt

DALLAS — Bishop Lynch looked primed for a late comeback after converting a fourth down with 4:06 remaining, but the Perry Weather Siren sounded for the second time Friday evening, forcing the game to end early and sealing a 38-34 Midland Christian win.

The Friars trailed by as many as 10 points in the fourth quarter, but momentum swung their way when quarterback Matias Leon connected with Zack Williams for a touchdown. Moments later, kicker Emma Joyce executed a perfect onside kick, giving Bishop Lynch the ball back with a chance to complete the rally before the weather delay ended the night.

Leon powered the Friars' offense, totaling 310 yards and four touchdowns. His highlight came in the second quarter on a 55-yard sideline run that gave Bishop Lynch a 21-14 lead. Nick Payne was Leon's top target, hauling in seven catches for 81 yards and two touchdowns.

Defensively, junior linebacker Alex Finley anchored the unit with 12 tackles and two pass breakups, while senior captain Asher Wheatley registered his first sack of the season along with four tackles and two tackles for loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Bishop Lynch opened the game with a burst of energy as Mason Schopfer recovered a fumble for a touchdown on the opening kickoff, giving the Friars a quick 7-0 lead. Just five minutes later, play was halted for a weather delay lasting more than 30 minutes. When action resumed, Midland Christian seized momentum with back-to-back scoring drives to go up 14-7. The Friars answered when Matias Leon connected with Nick Payne for a 15-yard touchdown, tying the score at 14-14 at the end of the first quarter.

Leon provided another spark midway through the second quarter, sprinting down the sideline for a 55-yard rushing touchdown to put Bishop Lynch back on top, 21-14. But the Mustangs closed the half strong, scoring twice and keeping the Friars off the board to take a 28-21 lead into the break. Midland stretched its advantage to 35-21 early in the third before Payne hauled in a highlight-reel touchdown from Leon, narrowing the margin to 35-28 heading into the fourth.

The Bishop Lynch defense came up with a big stand to hold Midland Christian to a field goal, but the Mustangs still led 38-28 midway through the final frame. Leon then found Zach Williams in the corner of the end zone with 4:27 remaining, cutting the deficit to 38-34. On the ensuing kickoff, Emma Joyce delivered a perfectly placed onside kick that the Friars recovered, setting up a potential game-winning drive before the Perry Weather Siren halted play for good.

  • With Mason Shopfer's fumble recovery for a touchdown, Bishop Lynch has now scored special teams touchdowns in back-to-back games to open the season.
